Apart from using natural lacquer for the purpose of protecting different objects, one can also observe the implementation of versatile application techniques afforded by its particular material characteristics. The process of making lacquerware is most meticulous, requiring much effort, time, and carefully executed steps. Lacquerware exudes smoothness with luster, and elegance with subtlety in the most enchanting beautiful way!
WANG Ching-Shuang (b. 1922) has been immersed in the world of lacquer his whole life, a living witness of the history of development of lacquer art in Taiwan. Since he started his study at the Private Taichung Polytechnics School in 1937, it has been a life journey with lacquer art for over eighty years. Now approaching 100 years of age, he still insists to work every day. His creative output has exceeded a lifetime’s expectation. He guided his children and grandchildren to become artists of their own right and to continue creating the lacquer art in each of their own original style. This exhibition represents the hope for future continuation of the excellence of lacquer art of Taiwan.
