A master artisan of the Puyuma people, Shun Cheng Li is devoted to preserving and reimagining the traditional crafts of his heritage. His journey began with a profound love for Puyuma culture, nurtured since childhood by the stories, history, and handmade objects of his community. To him, every strand of rattan and every bamboo leaf carries its own memory and meaning.
Li’s expertise spans rattan weaving, bamboo weaving, and shell-ginger fiber work. In his hands, natural materials are shaped into works of refinement and purpose—pieces that reveal the enduring vitality of tradition through meticulous technique and thoughtful design.
Beyond his personal practice, Li is a dedicated cultural custodian. He actively engages with his community, leading workshops to pass down these treasured skills to younger generations, encouraging them to innovate while honoring their roots. He believes that only through continual exploration can traditional crafts remain vibrant in contemporary life.
For Li, craft is more than the act of making—it is a dialogue with culture and an exchange of emotion. His work safeguards the heritage of the Puyuma while infusing it with new life, ensuring these skills endure as a living part of cultural innovation today.
