Mei-Yu Cheng is a rush grass weaving artist who began her journey as a high school biology teacher. After a chance encounter, she learned the craft from Master Huang-Jiao Lin. Starting her rush grass weaving career at the age of 40, she moved beyond creating daily appliance, transforming rush grass into a medium for artistic expression. Her work is deeply influenced by indigenous cultures, showcasing themes such as the Tao people’s hair-swinging dance and boat-launching ceremonies, the Saisiyat’s dwarf spirit festival, and the hunting traditions of the Puyuma people. Each piece vividly brings these stories to life, reflecting her unique artistic style.

Cheng's contributions have earned her numerous prestigious awards, including the Traditional Craft Award and recognition in national art exhibitions. In 2019, she and her mentor Huang-Jiao Lin were officially recognized by the Taitung County Government as preservers of the intangible cultural heritage of rush grass weaving.
