Respectfully known as Hayung-san, Hayung yuraw was the last traditional chief of the Atayal in Wuta, Yilan, led around 150 people to establish the present-day village and lived through decades of cultural silence.

He was a master of multiple Atayal traditions—oral storytelling and epic chants (Lmuhuw), woodworking, bamboo and rattan weaving, and fiber crafts—and the last artisan capable of building the iconic semi-subterranean house. In 2014, he constructed one for the Atayal Tribal School, serving as both a living classroom and a powerful symbol of cultural revival.

Beyond craftsmanship, he collaborated on film “Finding Sayun” and documentary “HAGA PARIS” that document the Atayal’s return to their ancestral land and the reclamation of identity, language, and heritage. His life remains a testament to resilience, cultural preservation, and the enduring spirit of his community.
