“Ili” in the Amis language means ‘multiplied grace’. After spending many years busy working in the city, Ili decided in 2000 to return to her hometown in Taitung, where she set up the Ili Studio.” Her work at the studio began with weaving and embroidery and slowly extended to pottery, wood carving and glazed glass firing before focusing on shell ginger weaving. Besides learning from tribal women, she also took weaving lessons from weavers in the tribe. Seeing herself as a seed for the traditional craft preservation, Ili is proactively committed to teaching and passing on the craft. Her shell ginger weaving has since received much recognition. She comes to the traditional craft with an innovative approach, and with a fusion of modern aesthetic, turns shell ginger weaving into practical objects and decorative items. Her entirely hand-made artworks have ingeniously woven nature into the everyday life. Many practical yet exquisite items have been created, e.g., shell ginger bento boxes, shell ginger handbags, shell ginger briefcases, and shell ginger shoulder bags. In 2022, Ili won the gold prize of the solo artist category at the National Indigenous Creative and Cultural Design Competition.
