Guardian of Truku Rattan Weaving
Tumun Masaw of the Truku people in Hualien has dedicated her life to preserving and revitalizing the traditional craft of rattan weaving. Founder of Ge Le Cultural Studio, she continues the legacy of her father, Masaw Asin, a highly regarded master weaver.
In Truku custom, rattan weaving was traditionally taught only to men. By observing and practicing from an early age, Tumun challenged this boundary and became one of the few women to master the craft. Her work reflects both respect for ancestral techniques and a commitment to adapting them to contemporary life.
At Ge Le Cultural Studio, Tumun’s practice demonstrates how cultural heritage can remain vibrant in modern contexts. Her weaving retains the essence of Truku identity while creating new expressions of beauty and function. Today, the studio stands as a center for cultural transmission, ensuring that this art form continues to thrive for future generations.
