“I wanted to weave our people’s clothing back into existence.”

Uma Peling is a distinguished preserver of Tninun na Seediq bale, the traditional weaving craft of the Seediq tribe from Nantou County, Taiwan. Taught by her mother from an early age, Uma Peling has mastered a wide range of weaving techniques and skillfully combines plain weave (tminun bale in the Seediq language), weft float (latu), and warp float (puniri) methods to create textiles that are both culturally significant and artistically refined.

In addition to her proficiency in weaving, Uma Peling is deeply knowledgeable about the traditional preparation of ramie thread, which includes stripping, dyeing, boiling, and hand-spinning. Drawing from tribal customs, she brings thoughtful innovation to her craft, allowing ancestral techniques to evolve and thrive in a modern context.

She teaches her fellow tribespeople to reconnect with their cultural heritage and shares Indigenous knowledge through weaving courses at the university.

In early 2025, Uma Peling presented her solo exhibition, Weaving the Heart, Weaving the Art (Tninun na Seediq bale ART EXHIBITION). This powerful showcase bridges tradition and modernity, revealing the vitality and transformation of Seediq culture while highlighting its enduring influence in contemporary life.
