This piece of “Mountainscape” is a unique work done by the lacquer master, Liao Kao-Shan, with the combination of classicism and expressionism. The craftsman uses traditional high tray as the concept of the shape to develop the creation. Skills of linen bodiless lacquer, shell pasting, and coating change are used to complete the round base shape of the leg on large-scale tray. The bottom of the work is based on the image of a mountain with yellow and black coating change before grinding it to present the effect of shadow. The composition includes harvest festival at Thao tribe, women wearing traditional costume, golden yellow rice ears, flourishing fruit trees to present the image of good harvest, and picture of field in autumn to reflect the natural and cultural landscape at Sun Moon Lake.
Blue color is deliberately used as the basic tone on the upper edge of the tray. Matching it with shell pasting, it brings audiences to Sun Moon Lake to enjoy the blue lake and sky with clouds. In the middle of the lake, lace pasting is used to highlight the elegant and beauty of the landscape of mountain and lake. It also fully demonstrates the splendor of landscape culture.
