“Only with a calm and steady heart can creativity truly flow through the loom.”
For Awaiy Butah, stepping into the world of shuttle weaving in 2010 was both an awakening and a turning point. In the interplay of warp and weft, she discovered direction, confidence, and a renewed sense of purpose.
Years of living in the city had shaped her sensibilities. Immersed in art museums, galleries, and libraries, she cultivated an eye for contemporary aesthetics and design. This sensitivity to fashion and visual culture gradually found its way into her weaving. Using traditional Indigenous motifs as her foundation, she explores new possibilities through the arrangement of patterns, the play of colors, and the layering of weaving techniques, giving each piece its own distinctive beauty and voice.
In 2019, determined to recover the ramie-processing methods that had been absent from her community for more than half a century, she worked closely with village elders to reconstruct and record each step—from peeling the stalks to extracting fibers. This restoration reestablished weaving’s vital link to both the land and cultural memory. At the same time, she organized hands-on training for local women on traditional floor looms, so that once again the steady rhythm of weaving could echo through the alleys of the village.
For Awaiy Butah, preserving craft is not just artistic practice—it is a responsibility. It is an inheritance from the ancestors, a way of living out gaya (the laws and principles handed down through generations). Through weaving, she seeks to express meanings that are at once simple and intricate, cultivating a practice that grows steadily stronger, rooted in tradition yet always moving forward.
