About the Exhibition

The International Biennial - Paper - Fibre - Art was created in 2012 in the small town of Le Vigan in the Cevennes region in the south of France. The aim was to:

● Present fibre as the main medium and paper art as a fine art form in order to showcase the unlimited and unique techniques used by contemporary paper & fibre artists.

● Encourage fibre & paper artists to consider the materials they use and the negative effects caused by some modern art materials.

● Present themes that engage with nature and with the conservation of the natural world.

● Encourage paper and fibre artists to connect in a meaningful way with society, with the art world and with their own inner creativity.

These ideals have since evolved into today’s theme ECO SUBLIME.

Eco relating to Ecology in its widest sense, awareness of the environment around us both natural and man made, an awareness not only of the need to protect the natural environment, but also of the negative effects imposed on the planet by our modern life styles.

Sublime has so many connotations. The sublime in nature was traditionally communicated in the early 17th century by the romantic painters. JMW Turner (1775 – 1851) was the first to present nature as an awesome, overpowering destructive force that was at the same time the most beautiful, subtle and complex that man could ever view or experience. Since then, many artists have sought to express these sublime feelings in differing ways.

ECO SUBLIME, therefore, translates as that sense of natural forces both frightening and overwhelmingly exquisite, not presented to us as a fine landscape, but in the sense of a possible ecological disaster, a global breakdown or planetary melt down of the planet, one brought about by man’s own hand.

As fibre artists having chosen to work with pure natural materials, we are in the most unique and powerful position to communicate conceptual ideas surrounding issues of the natural environment.
