Young Rising Stars’ Craft Creations Exhibition—Keep Young And Carry On

Exhibition Profile

With the diversity of landscapes and communication in a multiethnic society, Taiwanese culture features an eclectic style. Through time, the history, uniqueness and locality of Taiwanese culture have developed the social and cultural milieu in a distinctive way.  This development indirectly enriches the appearance of Taiwanese craftsmanship. With the development of science and technology, and the changes in the substance and depth of life, contemporary craft has broken away from tradition. Combining elements of fashion design and utilizing various materials to demonstrate craft with dramatic, experimental performance techniques, craftspeople endow contemporary craft with a new creative mode which encourages and inspires young craftspeople to show their various creations with different methods.

The combination of craft and creativity is the key to keeping the traditions alive. Craftsmanship and creation need all the effort of the young generation to unfold a new page for contemporary crafts with strong personal styles. Compared with those working in the traditional craft field, young designers reflect a unique taste for their creations. To bring creativity and vitality to Taiwanese craft, young designers incorporate life values of the new generations into their works and the strong power into Taiwanese craft definitely cannot be ignored. To embody the new generation’s spirit of "independence", "refinement" and "personality", young craftspeople work with an entirely new logic and new taste of life.

Since its establishment in 1954, the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute (NTCRI) has been devoting its efforts to preserving the traditions and passing the torch of Taiwanese craft to the next generations. With years of efforts spent on talent training programs, the NTCRI has cultivated young craftspeople with a diversity of skills as the seeds of hope for craft. This Exhibition features works created by young craftspeople aged between 25 and 45, and focuses on their succession, revival or transformation between traditional and innovative design. The NTCRI selects the fruitful outcomes of the training programs to showcase three main features of this Exhibition: "Dreams", "Practice" and "Persistence". Through the original brand images and creative aesthetics in modern life demonstrated by the young generation, the NTCRI expects to show the abundant life energy concerning how they pluck up their courage to pursue their dreams, how they become start-up entrepreneurs, and how indomitable they are to adhere to their own moral standards.
