Exhibition Profile

Acknowledged as one of the oldest surviving crafts in the world, the tradition of weaving traces back to Neolithic times – approximately 12,000 years ago. Even before the actual process of weaving was discovered, the basic principle of weaving was applied to interlace bamboo and wooden branches and twigs to create baskets, fences, and shelters for protection.

Honoring the purpose of Taichung Fibers Museum, the common thread of the exhibition is the word “weaving”. The meaning of weaving is not only the method of interlacing fibers to create an object, but also the act of connecting and intertwining people’s creative ideas from different cultures. Therefore, most of the objects that have been curated for this exhibition are the result of a stretch collaboration between France and Taiwan. It is an international program initiated in 2010 with the support of the National Taiwan Craft and Development Institute (NTCRI), which seeks to safeguard, develop and promote local material, as well as to benefit of a cultural exchange between two countries. Some of the works have already been part of exhibitions in France at the National Museum of Decorative Arts-Louvre and at the Grand Palais.

This exhibition affirms the great skills and creativity of Taiwanese bamboo craftsman; its know-how that has been passed on from generations to generations and their openness and generosity to collaborate with international designers towards a more responsible ecological world.

Weaving Emotions advocates the importance of bamboo as a key material of the future (natural, sustainable and ecological) often related to popular ancient crafts. This material will be shown in the refinement of fashionable lifestyle objects, within the aesthetics of international urban markets. By placing bamboo in the heart of the process, the obtained objects represent the symbiosis between design, crafts and environment. They become the long-term guarantors for the transmission of know-how.
