Seventy Heyday – Chen Huei-mei Entwining Art and Spring Flower

Entwining Art, one of Taiwan’s traditional folk crafts, is combined with the skills of paper cutting, wrapping, twirling, twisting and embroidery. In southern Fujian (also known as Minnan), Entwining Art is referred to as Chun-Zai-Hua (Spring Flower), as the Taiwanese pronunciation for Spring is similar to that of surplus, hence a signifier of praying for “abundance year after year.” Chen Huei-mei learned her craft from Hsieh Chen Aiyu whose style is of the Minnan Spring Flower discipline. The creation methods and forms of Chen’s earlier works were of the northern Taiwan style. Later on, Chen fused the Hakka “thread flower” and the Kinmen “auspicious flower” systems to forge her individual style in the creation of entwining art.

In 2019, Chen Huei-mei is turning 70 years young while marking a 20-year commitment to entwining art. It is hoped that in this exhibition Chen’s lifelong creation and devotion to entwining art will be presented in its entirety and displayed in three stages, i.e. learning the craft, extending the heritage and innovating the art. Please join us in the appreciation of Chen’s multifarious presentation of the entwining art fusion against a backdrop of contemporary life and fashion landscape.
