"The Art of Virtuous Beauty" focuses on the spiritual practice and generational legacy of Taiwanese crafts within contemporary society. Virtue (Shan) lies in the profound cherishing of materials and the land; Beauty (Mei) is the harmony between form and daily life; Art (Yi) is the crystallization of wisdom born from the synergy of hand and heart. When these three converge, craft transcends mere technique, radiating cultural warmth into our fast-paced modern era.
At the exhibition's core is the mutual mentorship between mid-career craft artists, designers, and the younger generation. Through these works, we see creators at their artistic peak—not only transmitting skills but offering an expansive vision on the interplay between materials, life, and society. Building upon traditional techniques, their pieces manifest diverse and vivid life philosophies. Rooted in daily life and scaled to the family, they begin with "relationships" and "care," linking hands and mind to weave the essence of living into creative thought. This fosters deep emotional bonds with objects, awakening the profound philosophy of "Xi-Wu" (cherishing objects). Through the practical realization of objects, daily needs transform into tangible forms, allowing creators to embody the deep connection between craft and existence.
This is an encounter between discerning mentors and rising talents—not a one-way transmission of skill, but a collaborative genesis of value. Craft artists rediscover contemporary relevance through teaching, while designers forge modern perspectives and boundary-breaking vocabularies in practice. Each innovative work flows like a spring from the earth, converging into a ceaselessly flowing river of craft evolution.
Taiwan's abundant craft heritage is nurtured by its 70% forest coverage, providing a wealth of natural resources. Above ground, timber and bamboo form a visible treasure; beneath, hidden water sources await like indigenous springs ready to be tapped. Craft artists shape exquisite wares from natural materials, much like unearthing these springs to forge forms unique to the island's cultural DNA. As these springs bubble forth, they gather into a vibrant, living lake brimming with dynamic cultural vitality.
Within this exhibition, we witness a fresh allure sparked by generational transmission—much like a thriving ecosystem where elements nourish and generate one another. As the lake flows into the sea—as the ocean embraces a hundred rivers—Taiwanese crafts carry their exquisite forms into the world. Amidst the shifting tides, they will continue to engage with the world, charting bold new courses into the future.
