Pearls on the Crown: Exhibition of Taiwan Talents in International Craft Competitions

Activity Date:2015/11/04 ~ 2016/05/01

This exhibition is based on two elements: Taiwan’s new creators who are born after 1970 and their crafts which have been displayed or have won awards on international craft and design exhibitions. As for the curation, it can be divided in two aspects: introducing these crafts and those famous international competitions. On one hand, starting from creators’ life experiences and motives, the audience will know how these creators think outside the box and not restricted to traditional concepts, taking a bold try to apply mixed media among modern craft, modern art and creative technology. In so doing, they develop a whole new style in creative design which is different from last generation, and attract audience to understand and care about craft design of new generation by sharing their life stories. On the other hand, through learning the process of Taiwanese creators attending various international craft competitions, the audience will know the similarities and differences of between Taiwan’ development of craft design and other countries’ through creators’ viewpoints and experiences. There will be creators’ reflections and analysis of attending international competitions, which will initiate discussion on future development of Taiwan’s craft design and gather opinions.

We invites 56 creators and displays more than 200 pieces of crafts for the audience to see Taiwan’s modern craft designs. This exhibition also includes two sub-exhibitions: “Shining Stars” and “Transformation: Exhibition of Contemporary Jewellry”. From the viewpoints of “international experiences” and “community involvement” respectively, these two sub-exhibitions show how social activists interpret their thoughts into their works. “Shining Stars” is curated by PIN sstudio’s three creators: Lee Heng, Hsu Ying-Hsun (Zita) and Chen Ying-Hsiu. The creators they invited have been learned metalwork and jewellry abroad or still live abroad. These creators are like stars falling around the world, and shining with their works alone but affirmatively. Transformation: Exhibition of Contemporary Jewellry is curated by Lin Tsang-Hsuan, Su Hsiao-Ting, Hsieh Chun-Lung who are creators from Chichic, a studio in the Central district of Taichung. They apply traditional metalwork techniques to transform crafts with history into modern jewellry. They let jewellry turn into a media and stage to demonstrate ideas or reflect the society. Through story-telling, these jewellry record the local culture and connect the owners and the history of Taichung’s Central District where was flourish in the past but now turns to a wane place.
