“Four seasons” on the name of the work refers to four gentlemen of the flowers in the content of the image- orchid in spring, bamboo in summer, chrysanthemum in autumn, and plum in winter. Plum bloom in the cold winter, orchid is delicate, chrysanthemum releases light fragrance, bamboo represents rising higher and higher on top of couplets of “flowers on the pool reflect daytime in spring” and “insects chirping at night by bamboo window represents the coming of autumn” are the presentation on the six folding screens. “Screen” sounds the same as “peace” in Chinese, therefore the meaning for the whole set of work contains the meaning of safety in the four seasons or peaceful and safe in the four seasons.
The four screens for the four seasons all include “longevity stone,” which is the symbol of long life to obtain an art style of harmony and coordination. “Four gentlemen of the flowers” are always the most important topic for presentation in Chinese literati art to reflect ideal human characters. Plum has the perseverance to fight against cold winter and it becomes the symbol for anchorite; orchid is known as “the fragrance of the crown” and it metaphors excellent natural endowments; bamboo also represents exemplary conduct and nobility of character; chrysanthemum is usually referred to serene and longevity.
