Dialogue Between Material and Land, a Symbiosis of Craft and Nature
The first phase of this exhibition explores the theme of “Art of Sustainability.” In an era of global focus on environmental issues, craft responds to the call for sustainability in a unique way, embodying the wisdom of coexistence between humanity and nature. Centered on natural materials and masterful craftsmanship, “Art of Sustainability” highlights the use of eco-friendly and recycled materials, showcasing a profound respect for the land and the potential for regeneration through exquisite craftsmanship. The exhibition features a diverse range of mediums, including ceramics, wood, metal, and lacquer, presenting a holistic perspective on sustainability—from material selection to design and production. It invites viewers to rethink the value and role of craft in fostering a sustainable way of life.

The Aesthetics of Sustainable Green Craft: Nature, Circularity, Joyful Living, and Shared Goodness
Yanagi Soetsu once wrote, “Craft stems from the materials granted by nature. Without materials, there can be no craft of a place. Thus, every region is the birthplace of its own craft, yielding unique varieties, transformations, and flavors.” — The Way of Craft: The Origins of Japan’s Century-Old Aesthetic of Daily Life
Craft arises from the necessities of human survival, emerging as a creative and technical response to local environments and natural resources. It reflects humanity’s wisdom and attitude toward life. Since craft often draws heavily from nature, its essence lies in harmonious coexistence with the environment, with an inherent recyclability that minimally disrupts ecological balance. However, industrialization has spurred mass production, excessive resource consumption, and environmental degradation, creating a yearning for a return to simplicity and nature. The concept of “sustainable development,” which respects nature and promotes eco-friendliness, has gradually become a dominant discourse. Within this context, Braungart and others introduced the concept of eco-effectiveness, emphasizing a “cradle to cradle” design philosophy where all materials are designed to return as nutrients to the natural system. Craft, aligned with these principles, embodies the ethos of shared good, shaping the ideal of sustainable aesthetics in “green craft.” Green craft balances humanity’s pursuit of joyful living, refined taste, and individuality with the values of environmental sustainability and shared life harmony. Crafted from natural materials, green crafts serve functional and aesthetic needs, while their tactile warmth distinguishes them from the homogeneity and coldness of mass-produced goods. This encourages individuals to slow down, embracing the patience required for quality craftsmanship and enjoying a higher quality of life. This experience embodies the ideals of “slow living” and “joyful living,” fostering an aesthetic lifestyle where “craft-inspired slow living” becomes a philosophy of elegance, sustainability, and mindfulness.
