2019-2020
“The banner is typically used to commend contest winners or to express respect and gratitude. It has commemorative value and is also a symbol of glory. This work is made by computerized embroidery techniques. Through digital computation, it produces 15 pieces of embroidered banners in red, black and white.
The series of works evolve on the civic movement, also known as the Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill Movement, taken place in my hometown Hong Kong since March 15, 2019. During this period, I have followed social media or live broadcast every day to understand the demands of Hong Kong people and the real situation of the protest.
I saw the government responding to public opinion with violence, the bloody images of the police abusing power and indiscriminately attacking the protesters. Every time I felt sense of anger piling up. I couldn’t believe that Hong Kong would become the killing battlefield of dictatorship annihilating dissenters and building up its own awesome dignity.
I become very uneasy and helpless, and am even more afraid to find in the bloody scene any face familiar to me. My thoughts and creation have been deeply influenced by the intense atmosphere at that time.
The images on the banners are my critical stance taken towards the officials’ behaviors. As their opinions and behaviors are getting more vicious and intense, it seems to please their superiors and help them receive recognitions and rewards. I use traditional form of banner to criticize the vicious deeds of “awarding people according to their contribution.” The banner is no longer the emblem and symbol of glory. On the other hand, it becomes the evidence of the evil regime.”
